wurde vs würde

Overview

wurde and würde are both forms of werden (“to become”). Similar to hatte and hätte, the difference is not tense alone, it is the mood. Indikativ Präteritum (factual past) versus Konjunktiv II (unreal, hypothetical, or polite).

wurde (Indikativ Präteritum)

Use wurde for a factual past. When someone or something really became something, or a passive action really happened.

  1. Er wurde gestern Arzt. (He became a doctor yesterday.)
  2. Sie wurde krank. (She became sick.)
  3. Das Fenster wurde geöffnet. (The window was opened.)

würde (Konjunktiv II)

Use würde when the situation is unreal, hypothetical, or polite. It often appears as würde + Infinitiv (“would …”), or after wenn.

Wishes and polite forms

  1. Ich würde gerne kommen. (I would like to come.)
  2. Würden Sie mir bitte helfen? (Would you please help me?)

Conditional (würde + Infinitiv)

For an unreal or hypothetical result, combine würde with an infinitive:

  1. Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich helfen. (If I had time, I would help.)
  2. Er würde das nie sagen. (He would never say that.)
