hatte vs hätte

Overview

hatte and hätte are both past forms of haben (“to have”). The difference is not tense alone, it is mood. Indikativ (factual) versus Konjunktiv II (unreal, hypothetical, or polite).

hatte (Indikativ Präteritum)

Use hatte for a factual past. When I or someone actually had or did something, or a state was true in the past.

  3. Wir hatten Hunger. (We were hungry.)

hätte (Konjunktiv II)

Use hätte when the situation is unreal, hypothetical, a wish, or a polite request. It often appears with wenn, or as the auxiliary in Konjunktiv II Perfekt (hätte + Partizip II).

Wishes and unreal situations

  1. Ich hätte gerne mehr Zeit. (I would like to have more time.)
  2. Wenn ich mehr Geld hätte, würde ich reisen. (If I had more money, I would travel.)

Konjunktiv II Perfekt (hätte + Partizip II)

For an unreal or regretted past action, combine hätte with a past participle:

  1. Ich hätte das nicht gesagt. (I would not have said that.)
  2. Er hätte kommen sollen. (He should have come.)
